DIY Golden Snitch Wings

Since Harry Potter's birthday will be coming up on July 31st, we've been preparing to make some delicious treats. Golden snitches are always the perfect, easy treat to make but they aren't complete without those special wings. In this post I have put together 4 different ways that you could design these wings and on the Dinner-Mom's website you can learn how to make the Golden Snitch Truffles! These diy golden snitch wings range in difficulty but none of them take too much time. Not to mention, they are super fun to make, you could even have a little party making wings with your friends!

PREP

First you'll need some basic supplies:
  • eraser (to clean up any pencil marks)
  • glue stick
  • gold sharpie
  • scissors
  • thin tip black sharpie
  • pencil
  • wing template
  • paper (I used watercolor paper because it's sturdier)
  • small paintbrush
  • watercolor pallet
  • water
  • paper towel

Prior to coloring your wings, you'll need to use the template to trace and cut out each of the individual wings, like so:

PURE GOLD WINGS

This first wing design is the simplest and doesn't take much time at all. If you're wanting something easy to add to your snitch but will still look great, this is for you! Most people have sharpies on hand but if you don't have the gold sharpie, you can buy a pack of the gold, bronze, and silver sharpies. I love using all of these sharpies for different projects and I've had them for quite a while. Although if you don't want to buy the gold sharpie, I'm sure other gold markers would work great as well!

  1. With your gold sharpie, draw lines going outward on each side of the wing.
  2. Draw another thin line down the crease of the wing with your gold sharpie.
  3. On the inside of the wing, glue about two thirds down and place a toothpick in the middle.
  4. Firmly press down on the wings, ensuring that the wing will stay put.
  5. Repeat these steps so you have a pair.
  6. Place the wings into your snitches and enjoy!

BLACK AND GOLD WINGS

My second wing idea is very similar to the first but with a small variation. This also doesn't require a lot of time or materials.

  1. With your gold sharpie, draw thin lines going outward on each side of the wing.
  2. With your black thin tip sharpie add more lines going outward on each side of the wing.
  3. Draw another thin line down the crease of the wing with your gold sharpie.
  4. On the inside of the wing, glue about two thirds down and place a toothpick in the middle.
  5. Firmly press down on the wings, ensuring that the wing will stay put.
  6. Repeat these steps so you have a pair.
  7. Place the wings into your snitches and enjoy!

WATERCOLOR WINGS

I don't know about you but I am a huge fan of watercolor, it's actually my favorite medium to use, that's why I had to include an example of some watercolor wings. Not everyone may have a watercolor pallet (or want to buy one if you don't). However, if you are interested, these wings were quite easy to make. They look more vibrant or yellow-y than my other examples but if you wanted a bit of a duller color you could switch up the colors that you mix.

  1. With your watercolor pallet, mix together  yellow-orange, orange, peachy-orange, gold, and a tiny bit of burnt sienna until you get the color you want (I liked making mine a bit more gold-yellow).
  2. Paint thin lines going outward on each side of the wing.
  3. Paint another thin line down the crease of the wing with this same color.
  4. On the inside of the wing, glue about two thirds down and place a toothpick in the middle.
  5. Firmly press down on the wings, ensuring that the wing will stay put.
  6. Repeat these steps so you have a pair.
  7. Place the wings into your snitches and enjoy!

FANCY FEATHERY WINGS

This last wing tutorial is definitely the most time consuming but it turns out beautifully. If you have the time and patience for these wings, I recommend trying them out. You can really see that a lot of effort was put into them, especially with the feathery edges!

  1. With your gold sharpie, draw thin lines on the outer tips going outward on each side of the wing.
  2. With your black thin tip sharpie add more lines on the outer tip going outward on each side of the wing.
  3. With your black thin tip sharpie create a feathery outline around the edge of the wing.
  4. Cut around the outline.
  5. On the inside of the wing, glue about two thirds down and place a toothpick in the middle.
  6. Firmly press down on the wings, ensuring that the wing will stay put.
  7. Repeat these steps so you have a pair.
  8. Place the wings into your snitches and enjoy!

Here is the final product of the four different diy golden snitch wings. As I mentioned before, you'll need to make two of each wings and then you can stick them into your snitches. After that, you'll have made your very own golden snitches... and best of all you get to eat them! Make sure you check out the Dinner-Mom's recipe for Golden Snitch Truffles as well as her many other delicious recipes which I'm lucky enough to enjoy all the time :)

Thanks for checking out my blog, I hope these diy's are helpful. Have a magical and exciting day filled with many golden snitches to catch! And by catch I mean devour because they're so delicious.
